Developing imagination
Uscreates worked with Corelli College and Charlton Manor Primary School to encourage pupils to use their imaginations more.
“The project was a success in mixing together a range of students with different abilities and approaches to reading. The process was really strong; as a result the final ideas were intelligent, imaginative and well thought through. Taking them to a real library to research was obviously an inspiration to the students and to the project. "
Shermaine Slocombe, Arts College Manager, Corelli College.
Teachers suspected pupils had little opportunity to exercise their imaginations. They felt that engaging in more reading would increase the opportunity for pupils to be imaginative.
Uscreates worked with eight pupils with varying interest in reading and two librarians who formed the design team. Their brief was to redesign the library, following a design process through research, development, design and implementation, exploring the areas of imagination and reading.
During the six-week programme the design team used in depth research, role-play, mood boards, consultation and prototyping methods to develop their designs.
The project culminated with pupils presenting their models of the library to their head teacher, and the Corelli College Arts College Manager who had commissioned the project.
From these designs, the pupils identified seven key features as being particularly beneficial to their reading environment. The designs are currently under consideration for implementation at Charlton Manor Primary School.
A film showing the process that the group went through can be viewed to the right or here.
