Increasing early diagnosis
Uscreates took part in a trial programme to increase the early detection of lung cancer directed by the Bristol Social Marketing Centre at the University of West England.
“We contracted Uscreates to deliver the co-created element of our early detection of lung cancer field trials, jointly funded by Bristol PCT and Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire Cancer Services. Uscreates were an able and enthusiastic partner, working closely with two communities to create two different but very effective interventions. I hope to be able to work with them again in the future.”
Katie Collins, Bristol Social Marketing Centre, UWE.
The programme tested the effectiveness of two different approaches: traditional marketing communications; and co-creation methods.
We delivered the co-creation methods by collaborating with community leaders and residents in two different areas to capitalise on existing community bonds and networks.
Volunteer groups worked alongside health professionals to co-design community based interventions to overcome the psychological and behavioural barriers affecting early diagnosis in men aged 50-70 years.
The main message of the campaign overall was to ‘get a cough that has lasted more than 3 weeks checked.’ The community interventions spreading this message, and prompting behaviour, were co-produced with the volunteers. They included a series of face to face interactions at events such as a bingo night, a community BBQ and a walking club.
In addition the community organised and hosted a World Cup Final Fun Day which included a football tournament, free BBQ, car boot sale, and a nurse on site doing instant check ups.
The University of West England concluded:
- Overall, the social marketing interventions were successfull in raising awareness of the message about coughing
- Co-creation has been the most effective in raising awareness and increasing knowledge; it was also the most cost-effective.
