OPEN MIC: Dr. Ranya Bechara
08.12.2011
Uscreates Open Mic started as a project for the World Social Marketing Conference 2011, and we enjoyed the concept so much that we now host Open Mic sessions every once in a while at our studio. The sessions take place in the morning, when an interesting speaker visits and shares their works with Uscreates and friends.
Next Open Mic Speaker
Who: Dr. Ranya Bechara, PhD in neuroscience from Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, Dublin
What: Can our lifestyles really make us smarter? We hear about them all the time: from superfoods, omega-3 fatty acids and various drugs, to brain training, meditation, and even physical exercise. Which of these are true cognitive enhancers and which are myths? And which cognitive enhancer has been shown by scientists to be the most powerful of all? A lot of people don’t realise that scientists have already found a powerful and efficent way to do all of these things. The problem is that we still don’t understand how it works. The science of cognitive enhancement is today one of the most heavily researched fields in neuroscience, but scientists have still not found any pharmaceutical or behavioural intervention that is as powerful and as effcient as simple physical exercise. Exercise has been shown to robustly improve memory, induce the birth and maturation of new brain cells, strengthen connections between brain cells, and reduce memory impairments associated with ageing and Alzheimer’s disease. To find out more on how exercise acts as a cognitive enhancer, tune in today’s Open Mic!
