RSA reveals design winners

The annual award scheme asks student designers to tackle challenging social issues, and is judged across 13 different briefs such as ‘Sustainable metals’ and ‘Body and mind’.

We really enjoyed mentoring some of the young finalists as part of the Design Directions Plus model, which provides professional support and stakeholder workshops for finalists. A co-design approach and user feedback benefited the entries for the two Design Directions Plus briefs ‘Independence days’ and ‘Design for social inclusion’, which was supported by Designs of the Time Cornwall.

The finalists for the ‘Design for social inclusion’ brief included a group entry which focused on the experience of young care-leavers (people coming out of care for the first time) Their project developed and enriched a channel for care-leavers to access advice and guidance through a phone application.

Mary Cook and Zoe Stanton, Uscreates co-founders, were also on the judging panel for two briefs. With high standards among the finalists, deciding who should win proved to be a much harder than mentoring. All the winning projects will be featured on the competition website at the end of this month.
