The web and behaviour change
Mary Rose Cook, co-founder and director of Uscreates, contributed to a conference organised by Patient Opinion on how the web can help patients, service users and carers improve their lives and services.
Uscreates exploits a range of web platforms within our projects, and shared learning from a recent project in Birmingham to increase chlamydia screening which deployed Facebook as a network and hub for the campaign.
Key observations from CHECK YOU OUT! included the mismatch between offline and online behaviours, the question of how to turn clicks into real actions, and the importance of ensuring clients and users take ownership of online projects.
In a novel twist on such events, the conference at Birmingham’s Deaf Cultural Centre on 22 June was run on a gift economy: everyone attending the day contributed something, from speeches to presentations to cakes to tweeting the event.
It was a great success and showcased how organisations are fulfilling the potential of the internet and social media to help engage and empower people, patients and service providers. The home baked cakes also kept brains alert through speeches, soapbox talks, speed dating and workshops.
