Motivating Healthier Lifestyles

Social ChallengeMotivate Healthier Lifestyles

Collaborators Birmingham East and North Primary Care Trust (BEN PCT), The Young Foundation’s Health Launch Pad, schools and community groups in Birmingham

Before BEN PCT identified the opportunity to develop innovative methods of motivating healthier behaviours to address a range of health issues amongst some specific groups:
- Older people with long-term medical conditions
- Men at risk of cardio-vascular disease
- Pregnant women who smoke
- Young people with a focus on nutritional and physical health

The PCT asked Uscreates to explore the potential of incentives to improve health behaviours.

ApproachWe engaged local people to share information about their lifestyles and potential incentives through radio show discussions, identifying local guides, focus groups and co-design workshops.
The information gathered informed the design of a new social enterprise reward card scheme for healthy behaviours.  The scheme will work a little like Nectar or the Tesco Clubcard, but will be tailored to people’s health goals and integrated with a wide range of NHS and community activities.

Methods: Link Tracing, Discussion Groups, Co-design event

Change and Success- Over 60 people shared their opinions, experiences and ideas
- Insight gathered is being used to develop the Health Incentives Programme for Birmingham
- The programme will be initially piloted with 800 people from the four target audiences.
